How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the cost of one unit.
  2. Enter the price you sell one unit for.
  3. Enter the number of units sold.
  4. Add other expenses for the whole batch, if any.
  5. Read the net profit, profit per unit, profit on cost and margin on sales.

The formula

Revenue = Selling price × Quantity. Total cost = Cost price × Quantity + Other expenses. Profit = Revenue − Total cost. Profit % (on cost) = Profit ÷ Total cost × 100. Margin % (on sales) = Profit ÷ Revenue × 100.

Worked example

80 cost, 100 selling price, 500 units, ₹4,000 expenses: revenue is ₹50,000, total cost is ₹44,000, so profit is ₹6,000, which is ₹12 per unit. Profit on cost is about 13.64% and margin on sales is 12%.

Understanding your result

Profit percentage and margin use different bases, so they differ even for the same profit. Percentage on cost compares profit with what you spent. Margin compares profit with what you earned. A negative result means a loss.

When to use it

  • Check the result of a trading batch or a market day.
  • Include hidden costs in your profit.
  • Decide whether a product is worth selling.

Assumptions and limits

Does not include tax, interest or your own time. Enter all costs for the same batch of units.
