The formula
Worked example
40 units at ₹250 with a 10% discount: ₹10,000 becomes a taxable value of ₹9,000. At 5% GST the tax is ₹450, so the invoice total is ₹9,450, or ₹236.25 per unit including GST.
Understanding your result
Discounts given on the invoice reduce the taxable value, so GST is charged on the discounted amount. A discount given later, without being shown on the original invoice, may be treated differently, so check the rules with your accountant.
When to use it
- Prepare invoices for wholesale and trade orders.
- Quote a customer a total with tax shown separately.
- Check a supplier invoice total.
Assumptions and limits
Assumes one GST rate for the whole amount. Cess, rounding rules on invoices, input tax credit and composition scheme rules are not included. GST rates are set by the GST Council and can change, so confirm the rate for your product or service (HSN or SAC code) before invoicing. This is not tax advice.
