How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the price that already includes GST.
  2. Enter the GST rate.
  3. Read the price before GST and the GST contained in it.

The formula

Price before GST = Inclusive price ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). GST included = Inclusive price − Price before GST. GST share of the price = Rate ÷ (100 + Rate).

Worked example

An item sells for ₹5,900 including 18% GST. Price before GST = 5,900 ÷ 1.18 = ₹5,000. GST included = ₹900, or about 15.25% of the price you pay. CGST and SGST are ₹450 each.

Understanding your result

The GST inside an inclusive price is always a smaller share than the headline rate, because the rate applies to the base price and not to the total. Subtracting 18% from 5,900 would give the wrong answer of ₹4,838.

When to use it

  • Work out the true base cost of goods quoted with GST included.
  • Compare a GST-inclusive retail price with a GST-exclusive wholesale quote.
  • Fill in the taxable value on an invoice.

Assumptions and limits

Assumes one GST rate for the whole amount. Cess, rounding rules on invoices, input tax credit and composition scheme rules are not included. GST rates are set by the GST Council and can change, so confirm the rate for your product or service (HSN or SAC code) before invoicing. This is not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just subtract the rate from the price?

Because GST is charged on the base price. Subtracting 18% of the total takes away too much.

Is MRP inclusive of GST?

In India, the printed MRP is inclusive of all taxes.

Does it work for 5% and 40% too?

Yes. Enter any rate.

What is the CGST and SGST split?

Each is half of the GST for a same-state sale.

Can I use it for services?

Yes. Use the rate for your SAC code, commonly 18% for professional services.
