How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the length, width and height in centimetres and the actual weight.
  2. Enter the courier's weight slab and the rate for the first and extra slabs.
  3. Add fuel surcharge, COD charge and GST if they apply.
  4. Read the chargeable weight and the total charge.

The formula

Volumetric weight (kg) = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ Divisor. Chargeable weight = the higher of actual and volumetric weight. Freight = First slab rate + (Slabs − 1) × Extra slab rate. Total = (Freight + Fuel + COD) × (1 + GST%).

Worked example

A parcel of 30 × 25 × 20 cm weighs 2.5 kg. Its volumetric weight is 3 kg, which is higher, so 3 kg is charged. That is 6 slabs of 500 g, so freight is 60 + 5 × 40 = ₹260. Fuel at 10% is ₹26, COD is ₹30 (the minimum), and 18% GST makes the total ₹373.

Understanding your result

If the volumetric weight is higher, smaller or tighter packaging cuts your cost. The chart shows how freight, fuel, COD and GST add up.

When to use it

  • Compare couriers using the same parcel.
  • Choose the right box size.
  • Include the true shipping cost in product pricing.

Assumptions and limits

Rates differ by zone, courier and contract, and many couriers have their own slab rules. Enter your own rate card for an accurate figure. Marketplace fees, GST rules and tax rates change and differ by category. The values pre-filled here are samples only. Replace them with the figures from your own rate card and settlement report.

Frequently asked questions

What is volumetric weight?

The weight a courier assigns to a parcel based on its size, found by multiplying length, width and height and dividing by a divisor such as 5000.

Which weight is charged?

The higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight.

What divisor should I use?

Check your courier's terms. 5000 is common for surface and air parcels.

How can I lower shipping cost?

Use smaller boxes and less filler so the volumetric weight falls.

Is COD charge added?

Yes if you enter a COD percentage and an order value.
